Many clubs will lend you equipment when you are just starting and doing a beginner course. Once you’ve completed the course, and are hooked, you will be encouraged to buy your own equipment. There are two options as a beginner, the first is to buy individual items one at a time until you have a full set and the second solution is to buy a “starter kit.” These fencing starter kits have all the “basic needs” items pre-assembled and sold as a bundle.
Each club has their own set of requirements for the uniforms and other protective equipment that you need for sparring and competition. While most clubs will let you fence with the bare bones - mask, jacket, and glove - there are many clubs that require a full fencing uniform to match the requirements for fencing in a USFA (US Fencing Association) competition. It's best to check with the club coaches or managers to make sure you are getting the right set of gear for your level of participation in the club. You can also review the Fencing Equipment Guide over at Fencing.Net. |
