Fencing sport has been included in all summer Olympics ever since the beginning of the modern Olympics in 1896. It is an exciting sport to watch during the forthcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China since teams from all over the world will be competing.
The term "fencing" originates from the self-defense skill of swordsmanship. The current sport's history traces back all the way to the 12th century, which saw the publication of the first books on swordsmanship. In the 17th century, fencing changed from a crucial self-defense technique to a widely practiced martial art that had fans watching the sport in an arena. Preparing for duels was common, especially in men from the upper economic echelon, till the beginning of the 20th century, when it lost popularity. |

Many clubs will lend you equipment when you are just starting and doing a beginner course. Once you’ve completed the course, and are hooked, you will be encouraged to buy your own equipment. There are two options as a beginner, the first is to buy individual items one at a time until you have a full set and the second solution is to buy a “starter kit.” These fencing starter kits have all the “basic needs” items pre-assembled and sold as a bundle. |
