Fencing sport has been included in all summer Olympics ever since the beginning of the modern Olympics in 1896. It is an exciting sport to watch during the forthcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China since teams from all over the world will be competing.
The term "fencing" originates from the self-defense skill of swordsmanship. The current sport's history traces back all the way to the 12th century, which saw the publication of the first books on swordsmanship. Many clubs will lend you equipment when you are just starting and doing a beginner course. Once you’ve completed the course, and are hooked, you will be encouraged to buy your own equipment. There are two options as a beginner, the first is to buy individual items one at a time until you have a full set and the second solution is to buy a “starter kit.” These fencing starter kits have all the “basic needs” items pre-assembled and sold as a bundle. |
